ANOC celebrates International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

ANOC today called on all of the world’s 206 NOCs to observe, celebrate and raise awareness of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

Promoting the fundamental principles and values of Olympism is one of the core roles of NOCs, as set out in the Olympic Charter. NOCs around the world work hard to ensure that the potential of sport is realised in their countries; encouraging people to live more peaceful and healthier lifestyles.

Sport’s global reach and popularity makes it the ideal vehicle for promoting development and peace. The United Nations included sport in their Sustainable Development Goals and under IOC President Bach’s leadership, the Olympic Movement has increased its cooperation with the UN in recent years to support them in achieving these goals.

ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said:

“Sport is a universal language. It is played and enjoyed by billions of people all around the world and has the power to inspire positive social change and unite communities. Every day NOCs are doing amazing work in their countries to promote sport and its core values; helping contribute to a more peaceful society. There is no limit to the potential sport has to drive social change around the world and today is an important way of increasing awareness and encouraging us all to do more to harness this potential.”
