The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee supports the following sport development programs on an annual basis with the support of Olympic Solidarity. Specific funding is utilized in building the capacities of athletes, coaches and administrators, as well as assisting athletes to realize their maximum sporting potential.
1. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Two sporting disciplines are assisted annually to the tune of US$10 000-00 each. The objective is to assist the most talented athletes aged 18 and below access up to date coaching, training and competition resources.
2. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR COACHES
At least one National Association is assisted to send its top coach to attend an International Coaching Course. On return, this individual will be in a position to impart international standard coaching to local athletes.
3. TECHNICAL COURSES
Two Sporting disciplines are supported to the tune of US$10 000-00 each annually to hold International Federation run and certified Coaching courses. The coaches will be equipped with the expertise to ensure that the athletes receive up to date coaching.
4. DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL COACHING STRUCTURE
One Sporting discipline is supported to the tune of US$20 000-00 every quadrennial to bring in an expert to assist in the setting up of National coaching structures as well as run courses.
5. YOUNG ATHLETES TRAINING GRANTS
Young Athletes who have the potential to qualify for the Olympic games are identified and supported with training, coaching and competition costs. Athletes can also be assisted to train from their home bases.
6. TEAM SUPPORT GRANTS
One team sport with the potential to qualify for Rio 2016 will be identified and supported in their preparations and qualification efforts. If the team qualifies for the Games, it will be assisted in its preparations.
7. CONTINENTAL GAMES PREPARATIONS
Identified Olympic sporting disciplines that have qualified for the All-Africa games and have the potential to excel will be assisted with their final preparations.
8. ADMINISTRATION COURSES
Several Administration courses are run annually to develop the capacities of Sports administrators in an effort to enhance the athletes’ chances of excelling.
9. NATIONAL COACHES CONFERENCE
A conference attended by top coaches is run annually at a cost of US$5 000-00 to provide a forum for coaches to be exposed to up to date coaching methods as well as to exchange ideas.
10. ONGOING ASSISTANCE FOR CAPACITY BUILDING REQUESTS
Associations are assisted in carrying out their capacity building efforts that are in line with the ZOC strategic plan on an ongoing basis.
11. SPORT FOR ALL PROGRAMS
The Zimbabwe Olympic committee is currently involved in 2 ventures under the Sport for All programmes.
a) OLYMPIC DAY RUN
This is has been held ain Bulawayo in June simultaneously with 201 other countries across the globe. The objective of the event is to commemorate the founding of the Modern Olympics in 1896. The ideals of the Olympic movement like participation, health, fair play and peace are also commemorated.
b) SPECIAL INITIATIVES
A special initiatives program to support the YES program has been identified as a new Sport for All initiative. The ZOC, however, does have the human resource capacity to run such a programme and has therefore partnered the Sport and Recreation Commission in the venture.
